Do you believe you can love, really love more than one person at once?
Do you think it diminishes the importance of loving someone in that intimate way if you love someone else as well?

It is absolutely, totally possible, and it in no way diminishes anything. It's like someone asking you which of your children you love more, or to choose between them.
It does, however, take special people to make it work, and a great deal of understanding and respect.

1 true love is enough for me
But there are varying degrees of love...

Yes, you can. Sometimes three people or more.
BUT each one must have an equal amount of love, never more, never less.

Yes, absolutely...but each relationship is unique, and special in its own way. However, after awhile it becomse a matter of diminishing time that limits the number of people...because it takes time to develop and maintain relationships.

Lilith,
I have no clue. I suspect that it is possible, but I am of the belief that if you are with someone whom you love and you meet a new person and fall for them, that there may have been some element missing in your first relationship. I personally, am greedy, I want it ALL and I believe that I can have it all from one person.

Yes, I believe that you can love more than one person at a time.........but....
Like what Sharni said, there are varying degrees of love, and the definition is different for each person.
Love with committment
Love with lust
Love with friendship
Love with compassion
Love with dependance
Love with acceptance
Love of a child from a parent
Expamples of perhaps the variances, however, we as a society like to believe that all definitions of love should encompass and be included with the life-long committment love.
In my opinion, a person isn't going to love two people the same as they are different. The only connection between the two is yourself.
Can a committed love survive love for another? Don't know.
I do know this, in my perspective, I know that I am unable to love another person as I love Cobalt. And, I am very satisfied with that love. Any other forms of love for anyone else is based on quite different scales. I adjust those scales according to the others. However, that love will never encompass what I have now, and will never endanger it either.......nor diminish the love I have for him.

You love hundreds of people in your life, in different ways. Some no less intense than others for being different. But it sounds like that question was more about capital-L, romantic love. The sort hollywood would have us believe is "one and only", soul matey kind of stuff.
Maybe it depends on the person/people?
I know that for me, when I've been in love with someone I've never developed those feelings for a second person. Don't get me wrong, I'll get silly crushes. Even big, pulse racing crushes. But I've always known that's exactly what they were.
But that's me. It's how _I_ work, or...more to the point...how I've worked so far. Life may just have held that curve ball back until it's good and ready to get me.
But if that curve ever comes, well....I'd do a lot of thinking. Cause I have to say, my first instinct would be that it was a sign that something was missing in my first love that I was seeking in my second. And if that route came up empty, and if I decided it really was just a case of Fate sending me two perfect people at once....well, after I was done being pissed off about the unfairness of it I'd have a good long think about what I was going to do about it. Because, knowing me, I'd be worried about one of them getting hurt because I was careless. It's not a situation I'd want to be in, frankly. And if I couldn't find a harmless way to fit them both into my life, I'd probably walk away from one. I'm, well, I can be a practical little bitch when I feel like I need to be. Not my most attractive quality, I know.
But to answer your second question (finally)....no. Simply no. I think two true Loves can't possibly diminish each other. I don't think they'd even speak badly of me. Just make my life complicated and raise possibilities for pain.
Which is more than my 2 cents. Sorry, your question got me thinking...and that's always a dangerous thing ;).

To me not only are there different kinds of love, but with the exception of those rare rare couples, i think most all love changes and morphs over time. I have always envied those people that can love each other for decades and still see the twinkle in their eyes. But I am also not convinced that all long term relationships are together for love (I know for a fact that my grandparents hated each other, because they both told me many many times).

Do you believe you can love, really love more than one person at once?
*Yes.........but in many different ways. One person can't be everything to another......so as a natural instinct "we" seek what will fill up the space left by one with the attributes from another! I say "we", but don't necessarily think everyone feels this way. I still love my first love.......but I don't want him in my life! He fulfills something for me and I take that at face value. Love can be a touch.....a kiss.....a memory......a common thread.......a common need..........a shared moment! Love is what is in your own heart.......no definition required! So a love for one person can be completely different than a love for another. And.....I'm talking the intimate love.....the romantic love........not the love you'd feel for your parents or siblings or children!
Do you think it diminishes the importance of loving someone in that intimate way if you love someone else as well?
*No........How can loving be wrong? Murder is wrong....hate is wrong.....loving can't be wrong! Life is too short! My heart is big enough to handle love in it's many variations!

Sure, I love lots of people ... my kids, our parents, all my Pixie friends, ... really, all kinds of people.
But those loves aren't the same as the love I have for my wife. She has always been and I believe will always be the most special love in my life. May sound old fashioned, but that's how it is. :)

I am convinced, more than one is possible. But nobody likes to hear that.
And you can never love 2 exactly in the same way.
