It is leagl in the US to use a hand held cell phone while operating a motor behicle but only if you are also applying make-up and eating a burger simultaneously as well:p:D:spin:

I thought that was only true, Lil, if you were also reading the paper between lane changes. :D

Well that law comes into effect soon as does the mandatory continuous left blinker!

It has been illegal to use a hand held mobile while driving here(Oz) for quite a while

It's bloodywell dangerous...and am glad they brought the law in...and the fines to go with it!!

I really worry when I see people obviously caught up in their conversation rather than with their driving ... but I do understand some particular jobs may really be hurt without the ability to use a phone. Maybe a special license for those cases.

Otherwise, ban driver use!

LOL@Lilith and IAKG. You two really shouldn't be so serious all the time. :D

I think that laws banning the use while driving are a good idea...however, I feel that if a person would go to the effort of getting a hands-free option (headset, speaker mountable, etc.) that might be a reasonable compromise. Also, if drivers can't give up the phones totally, maybe get them to pull over to the side of the road!

In NY state it is illegal to talk on the phone unless you have a hands-free device... what was a good idea then turned even worse as now I see people taking notes as they drive!!!!

No call is that important that it can not wait until you can pull over or get home!

Even with it illegal here in Oz, it still happens a lot.

I had some poor innocent young thing get molested by my

bull-bar as she tried to change lanes while talking.

Sadly, she dropped her phone and it broke on the road (Awwww).

No damage to my van, but for some reason she didn't want the

police involved.

Further South in Oz, Tasmania has just upped the fine for using a hand held mobile phone whist driving. There is talk now of banning hands free as well. There is no doubt that talking on the phone does distract your full attention away from driving.

A very vigorous TV, Radio and newspaper campaign is being held to publicise the danger and the increased penalty.

I think all those who use their cell phone while driving should be taken to I-94 in Chicago with the exits blocked off and have to answer 50 question to win 1 million dollars. This is for all of them at one time, everyone else will not be allowed on I-94 at that time.

bang ... crunch ... bump ... boom
