Harley's 100th. Anniversary




The inventor of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Arthur Davidson, died and went to heaven.

At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur, "Since you've been such a good man and your motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is, you can hang out with anyone you want in Heaven."

Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, "I want to hang out with God."

St. Peter took Arthur to the Throne Room, and introduced him to God.

God recognized Arthur and commented, "Okay, so you were the one who invented motorcycles, eh?!"

Arthur said, "Yeah, that's me..."

God commented: "Well, what's the big deal in inventing something that's pretty unstable, makes noise and pollution, and can't run without a road?!"

Arthur was apparently embarrassed, but finally spoke, "Excuse me, but aren't you the inventor of woman???"

God said, "Ah, yes."

"Well," said Arthur, "professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention:

"1. There's too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusion;

"2. It chatters constantly at high speeds;

"3. Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much;

"4. The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust;

"5. And the maintenance costs are outrageous!!"

"Hmmmm, you may have some good points there," replied God, "hold on."

God went to his Celestial super-computer, typed in a few words and waited for the results. The computer printed out a slip of paper and God read it.

"Well, it may be true that my invention is flawed," God said to Arthur, "but according to these numbers, more men are riding my invention than yours.

Diva---I appreciate it,but FYI,I don't own&never have owened a
HD!My bike of choice is a Triumph!Having owned motorcycle repair
shops,I have had many Harleys apart.I always said-"I will work on
them but never own one!"I know this will piss,many people off,but
they are rider, owners&I am a rider,mechanic!I have been riding,
for over 44yrs&have been to Triumph factory school.I got an"A" in
mechanics&an "A+"in advanced mechanics.In 44+yrs,I have never
"pushed"a bike home.I don't know everything,but I'll stick with my
choice. Irish
P.S.No matter what the brand.All of the popular brands,cost a small fortune now.
P.P.S.No matter what you ride,at least you're riding!

jseal---Yes,it is!I don't know if they're still in business.I was
referring to the "older ones".The last ones,that I saw pictures
of,looked like a "crotch rocket"!I personaly don't like that style!
For my personal bike,I started with a stock Triumph,& would then
chop& customize it.My current bike is a '71 Triumph(Bonne)that I
bought new in Conn.in 1971.I have since put on an 8"extended
front end,Harley rear wheel spoked to a Triumph hub,painted
Imron black with Kelly Green pin striping,extensive engine speed
modifications,& many hand made accessories.You don't find many
hand-made parts anymore,but I have been building this,for many
years!It is old(age-wise)but if I had to ride it to Calif..this afternoon,it would be no problem.On the other hand,I put a 'Hard-
tail"on it & I don't know if I'd make it at my age! Irish
P.S.They used to have East & West coast,factorys(Maryland&California)I don't know if they still do.I am"officially"not
in business anymore!

P.F.The first bike that I learned on,was a '48 HD,with a gate
(tank-side)shift.You didn't drop it,because I was 15 & it would
squash me!(incentive?)My father used to ride an Indian,with

jseal---The first motorcycle,that was registered in my name,
was a BSA.BSA stood for British Small Arms.In one year,I rebuilt
4 friends Nortons.1 850 & 3 750s.Another friend owned a Norton
& an HD at the same time.He also owned a "Biker"bar that I used to hang out at.He did alot of "Hard"drugs & drank alot.He quit everything & straightened out.He then commited suicide.
Moral:???? Irish
P.S.BSA,Triumph & Norton,were all British made bikes!

Triumph is still going strong Irish we can still buy the bikes here in OZ, All new super machines but there still being made and have quite a following here, particulary with the new modles, many younger rider are now opting for the bitish made bikes over US and Jap bikes.

Bilbo---Are they,what I call "cafe racer"style or the old style?
Unknowlegable(sp?)people often mistook my bike for a Harley,
because it was the old,straight up,laid back style,instead of the

Yea! I'm glad that "the bikes of my youth" are still being made - even if with the occasional mod or two. I get a little misty eyed when reflecting upon the virility symbols of my youth.
