Me and Mr. Kitty have been offered an opportunity to make a move to Florida. However we aren't too sure about taking the offer. We've discussed it with oodles of peeps and now I am requesting your help for some more perspectives.

Okay here's the skinny...

My father is part owner and works for a boat repair shop. He is in need of an apprentice to train now, to take over his position in four or five years when he retires. He is willing to lease us his second condo for 2/3 its market value. He is offering hubby $24000/year. However, there are as of yet no job prospects for me and Mr. Kitty would be taking a $1000/yr paycut minimum. Considering the Cost-of-Living differences. He'd actually have to make a minimum of $28000/yr to keep our current standard of living. Plus we would be losing almost 2500 sq ft. of living space. But the schools are so much better there than here and the economy is much better too. And it would be a chance to get away from some people/things I don't like here.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like you're leaning towards Florida. Start looking for work now since you say the economy is better there.

I'm biased because I'm freezing to death here and if someone told me I could be warm all year round at a paycut of $1,000, I'd be on the next plane! :D

Well we're just not sure really. I mean I would love to move to FL. Lived in Key West before and I thought it was gorgeous. The big thing that's holding me back is that he's the only family I have there. If something doesn't work out we're stuck there...We can only afford to make a move like this once you know.

Perhaps your husband can take a couple month trip down there and try it out -- before you commit to rent the condo and move all ofyour stuff? The big thing I'd worry about is the family dynamic -- will they get along and be able to work together?

Florida has tons of Targets and I am sure most would be thrilled to have good help. Florida is $$$$ but I think you would enjoy. Now getting involved in a family business situation is a whole 'nother thing. :spin: Just had a friend give up everything and watched her deal with it all falling to hell. Be careful and be sure.

Well, I looked up the possibility of transferring and boy are you right Lil...there were ten Target's within a twenty mile radius and half were within ten miles. That makes me feel a little better.

I have to say though regarding family dynamic....not all that good. My father thinks that he could have done a better job than my mother in rearing me and my sister . We have a decent, but not close relationship and combined with the fact that he's got that mental attitude of "no one is good enough for my baby girl", makes me a little leery. The thing that really has me a skittish is that he wants a decision almost pronto with no chance to check things out.

But like I said before I absolutely love Florida. We'd be moving between Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach if we go and I know from having traveled through there before several years ago that it's absolutely beautiful.

Family business is often difficult...if you do it, I suggest that a written agrement/contract be drawn up...expectations, responsibilities, timeframes, financial, how apprenticeship will work, etc...keep that part of the move and change strictly business to avoid future possible problems and misunderstandings.

Also, the request for a quick decision is a concern.

Concur that the area is GREAT!

rockintime’s point is well taken and can be presented as request to clarify that everybody is seeing the same thing as opposed to a business commitment for either party.

Regardless of the long term outcome within the “part” of a business interest (your relationship with dad is only part of total business equation), would this take you to someplace you’d like to build a future anyway?

And perhaps the most important “long term” factor that maybe should be closer to the front of the list...... the SCHOOLS!???????

(just some thoughts to help muddy the water) ;)

One thing that is a definite plus is there is no Florida State Income Tax. Ted Turner left Atlanta to move to Florida for just that reason.

SK~ I say go for it but have a back up plan in case the family dynamics are less than dynamic.

If all else fails, .....I just heard on the radio that "Key West Florida needs a fulltime chicken catcher".

Sometimes he ^^^^ hears things that no one else can hear! LOL!

Kitty.....this sounds like a grand opportunity.....and yet it has it's obvious and not so obvious drawbacks. The saying "Nothing ventured, nothing gained" keeps going through my head......and I'd love to say GO FOR IT........but in all actuality I can't push you until you are ready to be pushed! So......with that said (and not necessarily understood....even by me) I will sit in waiting for your final decision.......and just wish you the best of luck for whatever you and Mr. Kitty choose!

Thanks y'all all brought up some really great points. After some serious discussion in a place where we couldn't get too rowdy (Applebee's), we've decided against the move at this time. Mostly it's the time factor...We just aren't ready to leave Louisiana yet, so I gonna stay for a little longer, not to say that I won't decide to move to Lil's stomping grounds later though. :lust:

As PF said earlier, the SCHOOLS are very important. My youngest
daughter, has an Autistic son.She just bought a house,in one town, not because she likes the town that much, but she recently,
had an apartment(rent)there, and loves their disabled childrens,
educational support!I DEFINEATLY wouldn't reccommend a family
business.I have seen, many problems, caused by relatives or close
friends,working together! Irish

Sounds like the safest decision as the implied urgency to make a decision is not something that inspires confidence. I think that with a wife and family and the circumstances as you describe, I would be making the same decision.

I would say to your father that it is not posssible at the moment but with more information and time to consider it could make a difference.

Good luck in whatever you do.

SK,

And it would be a chance to get away from some people/things I don't like here.

Well geez! I had no idea you felt about me that way, oh wait you are one of the few people in Lousiana who doesn't want to see me lynched and actually like me.

Well I would have thought it would be a good idea, but then again I don't have anything to lose if it didn't work out.
