Car Seat Info?

My Mom and I went looking for baby things yesterday. I'm planning to register for the shower and we did some preliminary looking around. We ended up getting into a disagreement on one issue. And I was wondering if any of you Mommies or Daddies out there had any info or advice.

The issue is The Car seat. I've been told that the best thing to get is the whole travel system. That has the car seat that has pulloutable carrying seat that you can just take or attatch to the stroller. Sounds good to me. But Mom's concerned about the lengeth of time I'll actually be able to use this. Anyone have any info on this issue?

In my opinion...

You are the right one in this argument... depends on the child... but you can use the type of system that you are talking about for ATLEAST two years... depending on the set up.. maybe 3...

The cost... usually is LESS than if you were to buy each item (car seat, carrier, stroller) seperately... Not to mention... it is most convienient when you have more than one car.. since the car seat itself can most often be used without the "base" in a different vehicle...

Tell your mom.. she is most welcome to buy you all three tho... LOL... you can take them back.. get what you want.. have plenty of money left over for extras :)

I found it only useful when my guy was a tiny baby. You would need a different carseat once he/she reaches a certain weight ( was 14 for mine and my kid was almost 10 pounds to start off with) if you went with one of those. I found the carrier cumbersome. It was something I had wanted very much and found myself disappointed, but that was many many moons ago and I am sure they have made a lot of ergonomic changes since then.

I'm not a mommy, but I've toted several small children in the backseat of my car. Every parent I know that has a child now under the age of 10 has used the multi system you speak of and has been pleased. And as a "temporary" mommy to a godson, I enjoyed the ease of using the carrier without the base. Not having all the conveniences at my home like a swing or high chair, I found it easiest to set him in the carrier in the middle of the floor for feedings and to rock him during fussy times (he was under 7 months at the time).

They also had a two car household and one car, that he was most frequently transported in held the base, but the carrier could easily enough be strapped into the other car when necessary.

One last note on length of time, my godson was unusually large at birth (nearly 11 pounds) and thus continued to be a bigger than average baby. He was in the carrier seat until about 8 or 9 months. He might have been able to stay in it a little longer but he figured out how to work the strap mechanism.

There were no car seats for babies when mine were infants. Now I get to install and uninstall mechanisms any astronaut would be proud of each time I take my grandkids out for ice cream. (It’s proved economical as there are a hell of a lot less trips. :rolleyes: )

I think it would be safer, both for the driver from being distracted, and the kid in the event of an accident, if you put them in the trunk. You could tie them to the roof when they get bigger.

PF.......... you can bring a smile to my face... no matter the subject.. LOL... and believe me.. over the last 9 1/2 years.. I have often thought about putting my little man in the trunk... JUST KIDDIN... I am more the "tie the kid to a rope and drag him behind" kinda mom. LOL

I just want to say that if you spend the money for the carrier you can always turn around and resale it at a childern's consignment store. They usually will give half of the retail value for it. Which will help with the cost of the bigger one you will need.

Thanks everyone for your advice. And Tess...good point on the reselling! I've decided to go ahead and register for the system. It just seems to make more sense.

LMAO @ PF...Mr. Eliza got a kick out of that post...he's been saying duct tape in the trunk all along....lol :)

eliza, i think you made the right choice. the systems are great and most are good up to 20/25 pounds (so you should get some time out of it). the best part though is the fact that the carrier IS the car seat and can be used to lug the baby around wothout having to strap and unstrap and an added bonus...also fits into most grocery store carts.

Eliza, I had the full system when I had my son and loved it. As a matter of fact, it has since been used by my sister for her 3rd child and is still in fantastic condition. She said that she liked it much better then having the individual pieces of equipment that she had with her first 2. Best wishes for a healthy and happy pregnancy! *hugs*

Though some were bought just because they "look more comfortable than what we have now". :rolleyes: Oh, and don't forget "this one is great for carrying but it reclines too much, and that other one rocks too fast, and ARE YOU CRAZY????????? THAT'S FOR COMPANY!"

I better stop...I'm getting flashbacks!

Good choice Eliza, but I had to add some things. First off in all states I've ever been in now it is the law to have your child in a rear facing seat until they are a year old AND 20 lbs. Each kid is different. My first used our travel system until she was only 5 months and then it was easier to take her out of the car and just use the stroller. Now that my second is 7 months it all depends on the weather. If it's hot I take him out of the seat and if it's not I still plop it on the stroller. Even if you don't use it as a travel system for long, you'll use the car seat and stroller individualy for quite a while. Our only regret was we invested in an expensive one first and then with our second so close to the first we had to get a double stroller/ travel system so we had to shop cheap then. I wish I would have went with the least expensive the first time around. But hind sight is 20/20....or so I've heard! :rolleyes:

I am on my 3rd car seat w/ my 29 month old. So I hear you WildIrish. I should invest! Eventually even good old soap and water doesn't get them clean and you just have to replace. I love the idea of one for company! LOL...That is just what I need.

We got one of the travel units. I have to say that the base that the carrier locks into in the car is extremely handy. When ever I have to pick up our daughter from the baby sitter I'm worried that I don't get the seat positioned correctly. The base automatically puts the seat in the right position, so my wife only has to plop the seat in the base in her car.

My only complaint about the system is that it's bulky. The stroller part takes up most of the trunk on her car.

hell i get paw prints AND cherios!!!!!!! i think the kid makes the prints and the dog eats her cherios hehehehe


i had one of those systems, my girl was in it till 18 moths, only swapped cuz she was gettin so damn LONG she still fits the weight requirments for it tho LOL and shes almost 3!!!!!! 24.5lbs to be exact.

I had my son in the system your talking about until he was about 2, he would still fit in it, but he got to be to much of a pain taking out the seat bealt by himself so I had to get a bigger car seat, like Nikkis kid he still fits, weight wise, and i found that the carry on was very easy to use and place anywhere, like someone else said he used to spend all day in it, and prefered it to his own bed for sleeping...but i prefered the one without the base, it was just easier for me...well good luck and kisses
