Cyclone Yasi 250 miles off the coast.

The RADAR pic from Willis Island shows no wind, so it's broken the wind gauge.

Oldfart
02-01-2011, 08:15 PM
The island RADAR is on the blink, for some reason.

Stay safe both of you. DB, I hope you have a fireplace. I have the funny feeling you might need it by the time the night is through.

Still blowin' and snowin' this morning but I think we're gradually reaching the end. I think they're predicting another maybe 4" today but with the wind still blowing, there'll be a lot of drifting.

Guess I'll have to start digging out this morning. :(

OF, please keep us posted. We just want you and M. to be safe. Actually, we'd kind of like all of Australia to stay safe. :wish:

Oldfart
02-02-2011, 06:42 AM
It looks like it'll go way south of us.

Fang's in the path of floodwaters maybe in a week.

They're equating this storm with Katrina.

gekkogecko
02-02-2011, 03:00 PM
Ouch.

At least all the ice here melted. At least all that on paved areas. Now we jsut hae to wait for the ice-crusted tree limbs to fall accross all the power lines in the area.

Oldfart
02-02-2011, 06:16 PM
The northern Queensland coast is shredded, but due to building codes and dumb luck there is no indication of deaths yet.

Hugely different to Katrina.

Anyone heard from Wanda lately?

Fangtasia
02-02-2011, 06:17 PM
Ok, so who pissed off the natural disaster gods?? They sure seem to have Oz in their sights.

Looks so far that no one has lost their lives, so to me we made it through successfully, even if many houses and building copped a flogging!

Oldfart
02-02-2011, 06:49 PM
It's the building codes Fang. Not replacing disaster buildings with equally fragile deathtraps.

Lord Snow

AZRedHot

I fucking protest the weather here. Woke up to no water; all the pipes in the neighborhood are frozen. Mr. AZRH went out with the hairdryer to discover the broken pipe. Ooooh...a rainbow! Ours is not the only geyser I saw today. 31 degrees on the way to a whopping 38.

IN ARIZONA.

Now, we're pretty lucky compared to most. The electricity is on and the furnace is running. The roads are clear and there's food and (now) drinking water in the fridge. But we desert rats are ill prepared for weather like this.

Lord Snow
02-03-2011, 04:36 PM
So is Tennessee. Look at it this way....at least you have someone to keep you warm.

gekkogecko
02-04-2011, 10:26 AM
Warmer here today than it was yesterday...will go up to a high of 38F/3C. Possible icing tonight, rain tomorrow. Should finish melting the remaining snow/ice from a few days ago.

It reached the low twenties today but no snow. I've got myself a cold and so basically stayed inside except for a quick trip to the "dollar" store for some cold medicine.

I guess more snow is expected Sunday and Monday. Hopefully, now too much.

Lord Snow

It's getting there for us here in Tennessee. This week is supposed to be mid to upper 50's during the day, then dropping back down to the freezing mark at night. Kind of sucks since I can ride in the 50's, but not the 30's.

PantyFanatic
02-21-2011, 11:33 PM
Right now it's -11C (16F) which should keep the 1/4" of ice that's encapsulated EVERYTHING adhering like barbicels. The 2 days of above freezing we had last week was great until the rain started at the same time the temp came back to seasonable.

5059- The big issue with ice is it's weight on power lines and tree branches.

5065- A 1/2" crown of ice on the steps doesn't thrill the mailman.

5066- Rock salt sales have been great this year. LOL

PantyFanatic
02-21-2011, 11:34 PM
5067- Driving on the ice isn't an issue until after you get into your car.

5069- Don't keep the ice scraper in the trunk. ;)

5071- Remember to park close enough to an electric outlet that the hairdryer can reach.

My nephew has a remote starter for his car. Would this let you thaw the car from the inside?

Lord Snow
02-22-2011, 08:48 PM
Depends. A lot of times the block itself needs to be thawed before it can be started to prevent damage to the motor. In a situation where there is that much ice build up on the outside of the car, chances are you'd have to use the blow dryer on the engine before you can attempt to start it.

Oldfart
02-22-2011, 09:41 PM
Do batteries freeze?

Lord Snow
02-22-2011, 10:34 PM
Not sure on that. It's more than just the battery though. It's any exposed moving part. If your serpentine belt gets frozen and is not thawed you can crack or snap it. Either way you wouldn't be going anywhere.

sodaklostsoul
02-23-2011, 12:06 AM
Do batteries freeze?
Yes they can under certain conditions. Wasn't my battery but someone I know.

Sun came out today and started drying out the roads again. Now just need that light snow on Friday to be very light.

PantyFanatic
02-23-2011, 01:41 AM
My nephew has a remote starter for his car. Would this let you thaw the car from the inside?
Yes it would and I've thought about spending the $300 but cheap out for the 2 or 3 times ice becomes a real problem each year. Normally I do give it 10-15 minutes to heat everything and makes cleaning all the windows easy.............. when I can get in easily. LOL

Actually this was a different than normal snow. When the surface of everything is colder than the just barely liquid rain, that's when it freezes on contact and begins layering. Neither was this a SUPER COLD at all, so the engine starting, batteries, belts or oil reservoirs was not a problem for any normal winterized car.

51F right now under cloudy skies. High today in the lower seventies with rain predicted this afternoon and evening. In fact, temps will be rising in the mid/upper 80s this week with rain expected on three of next five days. Poor rivers are full and we don't need any more rain for a while. Wish we could give some to west Texas. :(

I got this in an E-mail thought you might enjoy. A new resident to Okla.

Dear Diary,

Just moved to Oklahoma now this is a state that knows how to live!! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. It is beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.

June 14th:
Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshiper.

June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing the lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here.

July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least, it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected.

July 15th:
Fell asleep by the community pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.

July 20th:
I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag, then popped like a water balloon. The car now smells like Kibbles and Shits. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat. Good ol' Mr. Sun strikes again.

July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts.

July 30th:
Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now, $225,000 house and I can't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one. Why did I ever come here?

Aug. 4th:
Its 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85. I hate this stupid state.

Aug. 8th:
If another wise ass cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work, the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!

Aug. 9th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when I sat on the seats in the car, I thought my ass was on fire. My skin melted to the seat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass . . . Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat.

Aug 10th:
The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do shit for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this damn state? Water rationing will be next, so my $1700 worth of cactus will just dry up and blow over. Even the cactus can't live in this damn heat.

Aug. 14th:
Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 115 today. Cactus are dead. Forgot to crack the window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and guess what he asked me??? "Hot enough for you today?" My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail. Freaking Oklahoma . What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?? Will write later to let you know how the trial goes.

Lord Snow
08-23-2011, 07:41 PM
I may be wrong, but solar energy might not be able to be harnessed for a forge. You'd have to either make everything electric and use solar panels to convert it to usable energy, or find a really good way to concentrate the light into a focused beam hot enough to make the metal malleable. Then again, I'm also not a blacksmith or an engineer.

Oldfart

Lord Snow did you ever fry a bug with a maginfying glass? the same principal can be used to heat steel on a little bigger scale. But you would be limited to small dia. material say up to a 1/2 inch.

Oldfart
08-23-2011, 11:33 PM
If you can get around the tendency to shed heat as fast as you put it in, you might get up to pocket knife blade size.

Lord Snow
08-24-2011, 05:54 PM
No I've never fried a bug with a magnifying glass. It would seem that while it is possible it's not practical. Unless you two wiser minds can convince me otherwise.

Oldfart
08-24-2011, 06:27 PM
If you can do it on the big scale, why not?

jay-t
08-24-2011, 08:36 PM
You could improve on this he is melting glass the focal point gets up to 3000 deg.,but you would only be able to heat about 3/4 sq. inch at a time.
