When it is said that "Love means never having to say your sorry" is it becuase of the caring, compassion, and understanding you feel for the other person.
Any thoughts will help and PF no smartass remarks to hijack this thread

I disagree....I actually think that the feelings of the people who you love and who love you back are almost *more* fragile than the feelings of strangers and acquaintences. "Treat the people who love you gently" ~~ I think this is a much better maxim.

Being mean/not apologizing to the people who you love is kind of like coming home and kicking the dog because you're mad at your boss. It's not very nice to the dog, and just shows bad manners.

If you never have to say you're sorry, you're probably not interacting deeply.

Times you're going to ruffle feathers, it's human nature.

Love means always saying you're sorry.

I think it would be much more accurate to say that love means saying you're sorry when you mean it...and learning from it.

*STANDING OVATION TO ALL ANSWERS ABOVE*

Ali McGraw was just saying what was in her script. She ain't no prophet! She ain't no guru! She ain't no saint! She's an actress...and not a very good one at that (might I add). That we took that line and made it truth...says a lot about our drug days...don't it?

We (humans) can be assholes at times! When we are, we eventually have to say "I'm sorry". It should never be assumed that "they" will know it. And it should never be said just to appease "them". If you are sorry and mean it...SAY IT!!!!!

For me "Love means never having to say I'm sorry" because people who love you have forgiven you before you even say it. Still it should be said, sincerely.

I might add, it was a line written by hack author Erich Segal, who has had no more follow up success than Ali did...although there was some wisdom in the other line used frequently thoughout the movie...you know the one...
