Thought since I was here, I would answer you PF!

It is an ice resurfacing machine for ice rinks invented by Frank Zamboni. :)

PantyFanatic 02-10-2003 05:54 AM

That's what I thought BiBi

Confused~
I thought Frank was born in Eureka, Utah (that’s how I remembered him;) ) raised in Idaho and moved to Southern California where he and his brothers were in the ice business, opened a skating rink and built his machine.
Where did Canada come in, unless maybe they became his best customers? lol;)

Velcro was invented by Georges de Mestral in 1948 - patented 1957, a Swiss engineer...not sure where Canada comes into that one either...but feel free to enlighten me *L*

There are actually two people who invented the zipper. The first person (Whitcomb Judson) originally invented it, but it was patented by a Canadian. Gideon Sundback (the president of the Lightning Fastener Company) perfected the zipper and was given credit making zippers a common trend.

The person who wrote the Star Spangled Banner was Francis Scott Key, he was born in Maryland...my geography sucks but i'm sure that Maryland is American

PantyFanatic 02-10-2003 07:07 AM

OK! That’s it!
I want to see your passport ryder. I think you’re just a ANOTHER confused American.;)

dadaist 02-10-2003 07:18 AM

Bibi: The one book is entitled "Ghost Towns of Ontario", by Ron Brown, published by Polar Bear Press. I can give you an ISBN to search on if that helps.
The other book we brought back, but I've not read (well, re-read actually) in a while is A Short History of Canada by Desmond Morton.

Sugarsprinkles 02-10-2003 11:22 AM

Let's see, what do I know about Canada, eh?

It's NOT all 'frozen white North"!!

And yes, Scotz, Windsor IS South of Detroit! That's the only place where Canada is actually South of the U.S.

Don't order POUTINE for your french fries!

Their cigarettes cost too darn much, even after figuring in the exchange rate on the money.

They sell milk in plastic bags! They have a cereal named SHREDDIES!!!

Canadian paper money is very pretty! Each denomination is a different color. Their $1 and $2 coins (Loonies and Two-nies) really weigh your purse/pocket down!!

Canada has produced some wonderful comedians...John Candy, Rich Little, Dan Ackroyd, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, Mike Myers and the list goes on...and on. Also some excellent actors...Michael J. Fox, Richard Dean Anderson, Lorne Greene, and others. Singers, Paul Anka, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Alanis Morisette, The Guess Who, and more. TV shows Kids in the Hall, You Can't Do That on Television. Newscaster Peter Jennings. And yes, I know some of these performers are dead.

Canadian's invented Trivial Pursuit!

When you shop at Candadian Tire, you get Canadian Tire Money with your change. Save enough and you can spend it back in the store. WhoooHOoo!! And yes there is a difference between Canadian Tire Money and Canadian Money.

You don't pay an electric or gas bill. You pay a "hydro" bill.

Tim Horton's makes great donuts!

Those of us who are/were blessed to live close enough to Canada to get the CBC broadcasts know how much better their Olympic coverage is. And Long Live HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA, including Ron Maclean (sp?)

They gave us Don Cherry.......love him or hate him, he's fun to watch, if for nothing else then at least to see what he's wearing this week!

Last, but definitely NOT least............................................. ...

CANADA gave us the WORLD'S GREATEST SPORT ..............HOCKEY !!!!
And for that I am forever grateful!!![

Lovediva 02-10-2003 11:32 AM

EXCELLENT THREAD BIBI!!!!!!!!!

And that was an awesome answer SS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually all answers have been fabulous!!!

Canada is a spectacular place to live! Yes we do have our problems, just like in any other country! But like you, we learn to live with what we are dealt and make the best of it!!

I am proud to be a Canadian!! Pass me a Coors light please!! ;) :D :p

And ((((Rabbit))))....

I wondered who would be the first to mention tim hortons

Steph 02-10-2003 01:29 PM

Spoken like a true Texan :)

Yep, our winters can be cold. Two winters ago, I was living in my home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. We broke our record snowfall that was set in the late 1800s! We had to hire back hoes to remove some snow because none of it was melting and we would have had to hire catapults to keep shovelling.

Just a note - I was living in a border town for a year and I went to a bar across the border in Minnesota. The differences I found of course were the money - I like our colourful currency - how do Americans tell their twenties from their ones in a dim bar?, their washrooms are bigger, their beer is weaker and their cigarettes are different!

Just a slight correction. The Southern Coast of BC seldom has sonow and if they do it does not last for long but the Interior and Northern BC have their fair share and the Skiiing is world class!:D

Steph 02-10-2003 04:26 PM

And SS - in terms of Canuck comics - you forgot JIM CARREY!

Saw him on Canadian TV doing stand up when I was growing up. Maybe being north of the U.S. and knowing so much about the states, we're able to make fun of our big superpower to the south.

I stand corrected...time to go collect $$! I had lost a bet on this a while back to someone at work who was quite adament that a canadian had written the words.

dicksbro 02-10-2003 07:03 PM

SugarSprinkles, I am so impressed with your knowledge of our neighbors to the north. Thanks for sharing all that. Learned a lot.

And somebody mentioned it was a great thread ... they were right!

denny 02-10-2003 07:09 PM

Wow, SS covered everything I knew and taught me a bit on top. So what I don't know is how long it has been independent from the UK, anyone?

BIBI 02-10-2003 07:11 PM

Wonderful to see this thread grow.....Thanks to you all!!! :)

I just couldn't let someone ask me where Canada was and get away with it LMAO ;)

hmmm.....Tim Hortons ... established in Hamilton Ontario in 1964 by a former cop Ron Joyce and Tim Hortons. My dad did the plumbing on the first store on Ottawa Street. Now we seem to have one of these establishments on every second corner.....lots that are just drive throughs too. BTW cops get free coffee at Timmys.......you can more often than not see one driving in to get their freebie!
If you are inclined to hang out at a Hortons Coffee shop you will garner the name " Tim Bit Rider" and what is a Tim Bit???? It is the hole in the donut. What a marketing dream come true that was!!!!

Tim Horton was killed in a single car accident just down the highway from here years ago....can't recall the year now though!
And Joyce's daughter ended up marrying Horton's son.
Ron Joyce and Dave Thomas of Wendy's fame merged together a few years back.......and became quite the conglomerate(sp) lol

AND FYI Dave Thomas started out by being an owner of one of Colonel Saunders franchises!

BIBI 02-10-2003 07:30 PM

Sugarsprinkles...........you are now a honorary Canuck!

Let me raise a toast to you
Coors lite will have to do
It appears about Canada you know much
Except that in reality Don Cherry sucks........;)

Ok......now who wrote and sang the song American Woman?????

That would be the Guess Who...Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman (left to found Bachman/Turner Overdrive), Jim Cale & Gary Peterson (I think I got the names right)...they said the music was their sound check song for about 6 months till they came up with some words for it

BIBI 02-10-2003 08:49 PM

AND Randy Bachman left the Guess Who because he became a Mormon and his new found religion did not condone the lifestyle of drugs, drinking etc. that was part of the daily routine of being a member of this band during this time.

AND get this, according to Rolling Stone Magazine.....American Woman was an anti- American song and was their only real hit in the states. Now that is ironic!!!!

jay 02-10-2003 11:53 PM

randy bauchman I belive wrote american woman and could it be...........yes I belive its true he is canadien damn we are great

scotzoidman 02-12-2003 12:50 AM

American Woman was def anti-US, & it may well have been their biggest hit...but I would hardly call it their only real hit in the US...at least I know I was listening to them a LOT in the early 70s...saw BTO here just before their career took off in '72 or '73...heard recently from a local DJ that before the show Randy Bachman & Charlie Daniels got into a scuffle in the backstage trailer over who would go on first...now THERE was about a quarter ton of fun rocking the trailer, with skinny little DJ tryin' to break it up... ;)

I didn't realize that Jim Carey is Canadian. But I covered my ass...I said

PantyFanatic 02-15-2003 11:39 PM

Yes Steve you're right. All the cute ones are on the Canadian team. I just never see a cute one on the Barbados curling team.:(

Steph 02-16-2003 12:10 AM

LOL pantyfanatic.

I'm guessing the cute Canuck curler would be Colleen Jones. She now does the morning weather on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

LOL SS - you got me there! Just a reminder of our biggest star was all it was with Carrey - first person to get $20 million per film, IIRC.

scotzoidman 02-16-2003 12:35 AM

Can't forget, the Bare Naked Ladies are Canadian...

BIBI 02-16-2003 05:44 AM

I remeber when the Bare Naked Ladies first began to gain popularity. They had a gig booked and it was cancelled by city council due to the complaints people made about having such a show open to minors........seems people thought the "Bare Naked Ladies" were bare naked ladies putting on a show!!!

monkee_dancer 02-16-2003 01:07 PM

my experiences

okay i come from quebec
and here are some differences to where i live in the usa
-snow is a different type
-even with exchange rates, stuff is cheaper in the ponitac county
-spellin rules are different in canada... i can explain more indept later
-language police in quebec
-mandetory to learn french
-legal drinkin age is 18
-no turn on red lites [i know in ontario ya can]
-only go to grade 11 in quebec
-in the town i am from, the french have no concept of soap
-schools are split by protestant and catholic
-pogos are corn dogs
-chip stands rawk...
-poutines are frenchfries, brown gravy n cheese
-the fries taste differnt

monkee_dancer 02-16-2003 01:09 PM

oh yeah, n ya can't get dr. pepper in my town,

cause down here, they almost swear by it
and up there football is not so much a way of life, especially in high school, it's hockey or rugby, some times even soccer in school
and there were no cheerleaders at my school

dude33 02-18-2003 12:36 PM

Finally a joke that explains what it's like to be Canadian...

Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, God went missing for six days. Eventually, Michael the archangel found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired of God, "Where have you been?" God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look Michael, look what I've made."

Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?" "It's a planet," replied God, "and I've put LIFE on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a place of great balance." "Balance?" inquired Michael, still confused. God explained, pointing to different parts of Earth, "For example, Northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth while Southern Europe is going to be poor; the Middle East over there will be a hot spot. Over there I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people," God continued, pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot and arid while this one will be very cold and covered in ice."

The Archangel, impressed by Gods work, then pointed to a large landmass in the top corner and asked, "What's that one?" "Ah," said God. "That's Canada, the most glorious place on Earth. There are beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, streams and an exquisite coastline. The people from Canada are going to be modest, intelligent and humorous and they're going to be found travelling the world. They'll be extremely sociable, hard working and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace. I'm also going to give them super-human, undefeatable ice hockey players who will be admired and feared by all who come across them."

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed; "What about balance, God? You said there will be BALANCE!" God replied wisely. "Wait until you see the loud-mouth bastards I'm putting next to them...."

No offence to my Southern Neighbours eh!

BIBI 02-18-2003 12:52 PM

OMG......spankings all around for you!!!! ;)

mmmm..........and what is the balancing force for the province of Quebec?

monkee_dancer 02-21-2003 08:06 AM

all the english people living in it
lol
im sorry that was mean... i came from the english region, and the are like linguistically-segregated

BIBI 02-21-2003 11:30 AM

lol......boy are they ever!

My french is non existant unless you count a few swear words. I remember trying to order a large double double coffee at Horton's in Laval......HA!!!! What a joke that was! :)

The funniest though was at a diner.......the french can't say hot dogs.....they say hod dogs and lo and behold on the menu was "hod dog" lmao at that one!

skipthisone 02-21-2003 11:43 AM

Damn, had to comment, both the bands I have been listening to lately are canadian...quite by accident I assure you, if I only would have known.
