There are drugs for the nausea/vomiting. If one doesm't work try another!!
These sites tell about them and also give some other ideas to try.... http://www.chemocare.com/managing/n...hemotherapy.asp http://www.chemotherapy.com/side_ef...ea_vomiting.jsp http://www.chemotherapy.com/side_ef...ea_vomiting.jsp |
Mum cant seem to keep the meds down long enough for them to get the chance to work :(
I've only got home from work not long back....so will ring her soon and see what her doc had to say |
From the 1st site....
Luckily, there are many drugs that your doctor can prescribe to prevent, lessen, or relieve the nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. These medications are called anti-nausea drugs or anti-emetics. These are a group of medications that can be used to control nausea and vomiting and can be given in different ways. For example, if you are unable to keep anything down, don't worry because the drugs can be given through an I.V. catheter, a patch, rectally, under the tongue, or even in a shot if you cannot swallow. Also, there are several things that patients with these symptoms can do to help themselves feel better besides medications. |
Still 1st site.....
your doctor may prescribe one or more of the following common anti-nausea medications: aprepitant (Emend®) dolasetron (Anzemet®) granisetron (Kytril®) ondansetron (Zofran®) palonosetron (Aloxi®) proclorperazine (Compazine®) promethazine (Anergan®),(Phenergan®) lorazepam (Ativan®) metoclopramide (Reglan®) dexamethasone (Decadron®) famotidine (Pepcid®) ranitidine (Zantac®) These can be prescribed for you to take before, during, and/or after chemotherapy. As you can see there are many different medications that your doctor can prescribe to control these symptoms. It may take trying a couple different medications before finding the right match for you. |
Just realized I put the same site twice. Here's 2 more....
http://www.webmd.com/cancer/feature...nausea-vomiting http://www.altru.org/body.cfm?xyzpd...ticleType=Major Antinausea drugs can be given as pills you swallow, as an IV, or as shots. Some drugs are available as suppositories, as capsules that melt in your mouth, or as a patch that is taped to your skin. It is important to follow your doctor's directions in taking your antinausea medicines and to report back about how well they are working. If you have nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy in spite of taking antinausea drugs, tell your doctor immediately. A different antinausea drug may be the answer. Or your chemotherapy drug may need to be changed. |
ondansetron (Zofran®)
In it's non-generic form can be injected and is the best med I have ever taken for nausea. I will not have surgery without it. There is also suppository phenerg(h)an. Then it would by-pass her upper digestive system. It works but makes you drowsy. |
I rang Dad, Mum has been admitted to hospital. She's been put on an IV. And has finally been able to eat. They are going to keep her in for at least a few days to try to get it sorted.
She has her next Chemo treatment on Tuesday |
Thanks for the update! The prayers continue!

((((Sharni)))) You have my continued prayers and support.
|
Thanx all.
I rang Mum in hospital last night. While she is feeling better, which is a good thing for sure, i still got that bad feeling :( The Doc ordered some tests and a scan yesterday, he's checking to see if the first treatment has worked on the cancer (it should have shrunk at least some), or due to Mum being soooo ill, whether something else is there. I should hear tonight what the results are. |
((((((Sharni))))))) You're still getting lots of good thoughts and well wishes from me too.
|
(((((Sharni)))))
Continued prayers for Mum, her doctors, nurses, your family and you. |
Update:
Mum got her blood test results....she has scepticemia and traces of ecoli in her blood....they are currently treating her for them both. Mum was due out of hospital yesterday, but that aint happening. She will be in there 'til at least Thursday. They have been treating her with antibiotics, but she is still getting temps, so something is still not right Mum was sposed to have her next treatment on Tuesday, but the doc reckons that wont be happening, they need to investigate the infections more and get them under control. The doc apparently hasn't mentioned anything about the scans done to see if the cancer has shrunk, dunno if that means good news or bad :( |
No wonder she didn't want to eat. Hug her gently for Pixies.
|
Darlin', you are way overdue for some good news...hope there's some waiting around the next corner...
Yeh, I reckon there's no ganja in the world that would have stimulated her appetite... |
Well? Or at least somehow better?
|
Mum is still in hospital, but is doing somewhat better. She also had another bug as well, unsure what it was, but it was causing infection. They believe they may finally have them under control. She has to have a blood test tomorrow to see if they caught them all, if they have she MAY be able to go home.
Mum had her last day of the second treatment today. Her final treatment is on the 4th of March....my sister and I are looking to fly down on the 7th to be with both Mum and Dad for the final verdict (if the Chemo worked), all going well! |
Sharni
Our thoughts and prayers are with you from all round the globe. Hang in there darlin. Joe |
((((((Sharni and mom))))))) ~~ I'm hoping for a positive end to the chemo treatments and her to spend some happy days at home where she belongs.
|
Update: It's not going well
Mum is still in hospital :( She picked up a 'superbug' and had to be treated for that. She then picked up some other hospital bug :( Her immune system is SOOOOO low she just keeps getting infection after infection, she is not a well woman. They have put off her having the last Chemo treatment for now, as they are worried that bombarding her, 1 while she is so down & 2 dropping her immunity even lower, will do more harm than good. *sigh*...I still have that 'bad' feeling about all this Bilbo and I are looking at driving all the clan down to Victoria 2 weeks after Easter, Bilbo wants to see his Mum, and naturally i want to see my Mum & Dad. The kids want to see both. So this is where its at. |
Not been easy. Doesn't sound like it's going to be easy for a while.
Our thoughts are with you all. :console: |
What he said^^^^^^^.
((((((((((((((((Sharni)))))))))))) |
ugh..... :(
I'm so sorry Sharni. I hope things are getting a little bit better each day. You and your family are definitely in my thoughts. (((((((Sharni)))))))) |
Is it a long trip to visit them? I know I'm excited about seeing my mom at Spring Break. It's about 7 hours away and I don't get there enough.
I hope you get to make the trip and I hope she is feeling scads better by then. |

Not quite that far PF *LOL*...Mum is in Victoria not South Australia
Down the bottom left of Victoria you can see Warrnambool on the map. Mum lives near there, its 1,800 klm around about....or 18hrs straight through. Red Line |
You'll not get to see the Rock nor get to stop in and tell Johnny what a great job he's doing going that way. And there's no way you can get there on the wrong side of the road, anyway. Ya best just follow the Wally Map.
 |
1. Don't wanna see a big rock in the middle of nowhere anyway!
2. Johnny doesnt live there anymore! 3. We drive on the correct side of the road! |
18 hours by car is a loooooooooooooooooong drive. Especially with kids :D
|

Nyquil? :p And no I've never done that. |

Certainly an inviting thought tho.... |
18 hours on the road is one of the main reasons for a national pastime here in Oz, single vehicle rollovers.
It's only just over 1100 miles in the old money. |
Just catching up and I have to add my *hugs n love* to you and your mum...
((((((((((Sharni)))))))))) ((((((((((Mum)))))))))) I wish I had some magical words to calm your fears and soothe your anxiety...but I don't. The best I can do is tell you I know how you are feeling because I've been there. Talk to her often Shar! Hold her and tell her you love her as soon as you can! And never lose hope! There is always hope...till there is no hope! Mom's are pretty good about fighting back. It never ceases to amaze me how strong women can be. Even when they seem at their weakest there is that inner strength that they call upon and somehow overcome the mightiest odds. Hang in there Shar! Be strong when you can and lean on us when you feel a bit weak! |
((((((((big Hugs))))))))))))
|
Best wishes of strength to your Mom
Stay strong (((((Sharni))))) |
An Update:
Mum has been put back into hospital, the result came back from the scan. The cancer has not shrunk at all, despite the 2 treatments she has had :(. It also hasn't got any larger, which i spose is a sorta blessing! Mum is depressed, crying etc. She is tired, clothes falling off her, and well looks bad! They are going to do a biopsy on the tumor either today or tomorrow. They need to know if the one in her tummy is actually lymphoma or if its a new batch of breast cancer (she lost a breast over 24 yrs ago to it, and it came back in her spine more recently) *sigh* I floating around lost, hard to explain, i want to go now, but restrictions and responsibilities make that impossible, so for now i have to make do with phonecalls, and to be honest, its tearing me up. |
