I confess I nearly burst into tears today at the wheel of my car... I'm having so much trouble learning to drive standard!!!!!!!! :boohoo:

Lord Snow 05-22-2010 03:25 PM

Funny, I figured such a lovely lady would know how to handle a stick by now. I'm sure you've had lots of...........oh wait, you meant an actual car.......

Neige 05-22-2010 03:33 PM

:p

I learned on automatic cars, and I've always had automatic cars to drive til now... But now I've got the cutest (standard!) car and I can't get it into first gear 2/3 of the time!!!

PantyFanatic 05-22-2010 05:03 PM

Is it a 3, 4 or 5 speed and is the stick on the floor or tree hun?

Neige 05-22-2010 05:09 PM

It's a 5 speed. What do you mean, tree? The shift is in the console between the seats.

PantyFanatic 05-22-2010 06:11 PM

Some cars (this is a car, right?) had them mounted on the right side of the steering column.

Don't let it bug you. Think of the millions of idiots that have driven stick shift over the years. We certainly know it is something you'll do as soon as you get the 'feel'. It is just a case of getting the 'knack', then it will become subconscious. That may easily be part of the issue now for you. You're trying too hard.

Are you having trouble finding neutral, or getting into 1st gear? If you are getting a lot of grinding it is most likely you're just not pressing the clutch completely in. That's the most common problem in the beginning.

You'll have it mastered in no time and wonder why it was ever an issue. Trust me.

Oldfart 05-22-2010 06:55 PM

Is the problem when you are taking off from rest, or is this when you are coming to a halt (as at traffic lights)? As PF says, it's simply a matter of practice and perseverence.

LOL PF you are showing your age I don't think they have built anything with 3 on the tree since the mid 70's.

Lilith 05-22-2010 08:41 PM

That was the last time he had a valid license. You know they take your license away when you get too old to drive.

Neige 05-22-2010 09:16 PM

Yeah it's a car - that's what I thought you meant by tree, but I asked Wilderness who is handy with cars and he had no clue so I figured I was safer asking! :p

The problem is taking off from rest. Once I get going, I'm fine until I've stopped again! I spent a while in the deserted industrial park today just stopping and trying to start, but I didn't seem to be improving. :(

And Booger, my car is an '88 - not mid-70's, sure, but nearly as old as me!!!

Oldfart 05-22-2010 09:59 PM

I confess that it's been a while since I thought of manual transmissions, Mrs Oldfart only drives automatic cars and I can drive both, so we have autos.

The tree is the steering wheel post, but ignore that because you have a five on the floor.

In a car that old, there could be a number of underlying problems. Do any "manual" drivers have a problem with the car?

Neige 05-22-2010 10:21 PM

Yeah, it's not the perfect car to learn on... Wilderness's dad is a bit of a mechanic and he has no problem driving it, nor does Wilderness, but they've said that it's because they've both driven such a wide variety of cars that they're fine with it. Wild's dad likes making jokes on how my driving isn't helping the problems the car has. :p

Fangtasia 05-22-2010 10:23 PM

I confess i hold a manual/auto licence.....but i havent driven a manual since i passed my driving test *L*
I learnt to drive in a valiant tree manual, i hated the damn tank, it was huge and not good to turn around in tight spots *L* Bilbo was not good to learn from lol (sorry hun)...so i ended up going through a driving school, they had a smaller easier manual to drive

Lord Snow 05-23-2010 11:38 AM

My first car was a stick on floor. Easiest way I learned to take off was I'd go ahead and push the clutch all the way in, keep the engine revving and let up as slowly as possible. Not the best for the car, but it'll help you learn where the clutch starts to catch and how much gas to get it. Don't worry about red line or anything like that. It sounds like you're just having trouble controlling both feet at once.

Neige 05-23-2010 11:47 AM

Yeah, I do think that my problem is I'm letting up the clutch too quick.

PantyFanatic 05-23-2010 02:09 PM

If when you let up you get a lurch and then stall, that's it. As OF said, just keep doing it and the feel for how slow to leave off the clutch and how much accelerator to apply will become a natural non-thought. :thumb:

Oldfart 05-23-2010 07:39 PM

I confess that I thought that "If when you let up you get a lurch and then stall, " was the morning after the night before.

PantyFanatic 05-23-2010 09:16 PM

I confess I thought Lurch was your butler.

Lord Snow 05-23-2010 09:20 PM

That would make him Gomez, and I guess you would Herman right PF?

Oldfart 05-23-2010 09:31 PM

Naaah! Herman is a Munster, not a panty-ster.

PantyFanatic 05-23-2010 09:35 PM

I'm Herman MunCHer. :licker:

Neige 05-24-2010 02:12 PM

I confess that I spent money today!!! I got us a new kitchen table & chairs (well, new-to-us, anyway :p ) and I bought myself a wine-making bucket and carboy, and a 72-bottle wine rack.

Oldfart 05-24-2010 05:37 PM

I haven't heard of "a wine-making bucket" before. Is this an Acadian thing, or just something that bypassed Oz?

pinkFlames 05-24-2010 08:00 PM

As wine is cheaper than water, I don't see any market for a "wine-making bucket" over here.

Neige 05-24-2010 08:07 PM

Well I admit I don't know much about making wine yet, but from what I understand, you start the kit in the bucket, before using the carboy. I'm looking forward to making wine from scratch as well as from kits!

Yuppie home-brew?

Neige 05-24-2010 08:28 PM

It's much cheaper to make wine here than to buy it. My parents have been making it for years.

nikki1979 05-25-2010 06:54 AM

Neige 05-28-2010 06:04 PM

Tonight we are playing Munchkin and my drink of choice is the Bloody Mary :D

PantyFanatic 05-28-2010 06:42 PM

I suddenly have a taste for lamb. I'm going to get a gyro tonight. :car:

Neige 05-28-2010 06:43 PM

Mind you, I don't think that the donairs we got are actual lamb. I'd guess beef.

Oldfart 05-28-2010 07:40 PM

Some food authorities don't limit Kebab to lamb, allowing chicken and beef as well.

Fangtasia 05-28-2010 09:25 PM

I confess i just picked up the newest Sookie Stackhouse novel, Dead In The Family.

Woot now i gotta read back through the other 9 to pick it all back up again *LOL*

Oldfart 05-29-2010 07:10 PM

And here, so far. I'm just wishing the wet season would end properly, we're hanging out for the Dry. It's a tad overdue.

jseal 05-30-2010 07:52 AM

I confess that I will enjoy the holiday tomorrow.

Neige 05-30-2010 09:17 AM

I confess that I got attacked by crows this morning. 4 of them. Swooping at me and hitting and grabbing at my head. They chased me for 3 blocks. I was really freaked out.

Oldfart 05-30-2010 09:51 AM

I confess that I think you need a hat with big eyes on it.
