They're a amphibian Lil....and interesting for sure, you can feed them out of your hand once they get used to you.

Changing them with hormones drastically shortens their lifespan, also is not alway successful. While they can change it is not advisable to try to force them to. Some have been documented doing it naturally, but that is extremely rare.

They stay in this larval form all their lives, and are one of the few that breeds in this form. My kids love em, and me too *L*. They are just so different to the norm.

And there are 17 different ways to pronounce "axolotl",

all of them incorrect.

Yes, Pat, I'd like to buy a vowel...or three...

Noah 09-25-2008 03:44 AM

Its pronounced Ax-oh-lot-ul

Oldfart 09-25-2008 06:52 AM

It's pronounced "banned in the Northern Territory". If those little suckers got loose in tropical waterways, it'd give the cane toads something else to eat.

Noah 09-25-2008 01:09 PM

They prefer cold/cool water. If the water gets to warm they tend to get ill, Not really a tropical critter at all, so i dont understand the NT reasoning there

Pretty. I love the plants. I have tried to take pics of my tank now that I have it all set up and have some fishies. I've started off with plastic plants because I'm growing my real ones from bulbs. So far we have 4 different types of plants growing. I have 4 very bright African Cichlids 1 blue, 1 orange and 2 yellow. I also have 2 red finned sharks. We've had it set up about 3 weeks now and all are doing well. I'm really enjoying having such a large tank.

Noah 09-27-2008 03:55 PM

Definately need pics Lil...sounds great! I'd like to get other types of cichlids one day, but most others, other than the Angels or Rams, are not real heavily planted friendly *L* I'd also need a larger tank, not sure Bilbo would let me have it *L*...i think he believes 10 tanks is enough *LOL*

Planted tanks are just awesome, like a bit of nature in your house

Just watch your red-finned sharks, they tend to be intolerant of their own kind, especially as the reach maturity. I had 3 of them, 1 was bullied to death and the other i rescued and rehomed before the big guy knocked him off. I was so upset too, the 3 of them looked stunning in the tank.

2ft tank updates

This tank has had a major plant reshuffle and haircut! The plants had taken over practically all the space, the were crammed against the front glass *L* I want to put fish in it so the need somewhere to swim, so maintenance was required.

I forgot to get some of it just before the prune, the one below was taken of the 14th

Not a jungle in the above pic really, but take my word for it, it was absolutely feral yesterday when i finally got a chance to fix it up!

Anyway, all the wisteria was removed as it was just taking over everything, some plants were trimmed and the trimmed parts replanted, runners were cut and replanted elsewhere, large sword moed from one side to the other, wood changed slightly.

New plants will be added over the coming weeks, but this is it today

**The pics come out not true to colours due to wood still releasing tannins
