What makes the song so sad is that it is the song of someone disillusioned with love, but it is treated as a happy song.

"is this the sweet song which called the young sailers" is an obvious reference to the Sirens and the Lorelei who lured seamen to their destruction on the shoals.

"Rainbows are visions, but only illusions"

"Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices.."


It is a lovely piece of melancholy, a little like Puddle of Mudd's "She Fucking Hates Me". If you've not heard this one, it's addictive.
