Too old for a girlfriend
Since i'm fifty and she's 47, bf/gf seems a little young for us. Significant other sounds like I'd be refering to a robot, never liked that from the first time I heard it in the late seventies. I'm looking for other terms to use when we refer to each other in conversation. Right now, I'm using "the gal that I'm seeing" but that doesn't really do the trick either. We're in an exclusive, committed relationship so I'd like to find a term that is respectful of that.
In another relationship we used "companion" which worked quite well. Any other ideas? Thanks! Treeview |
Fuck-buddy???
**ducks and runs** |
Partner
Ball & Chain or Handbrake :D:D:D:D:D |
main squeeze
old lady woman friend |
Significant other to me is the best suited...
How about life partner?? |
I'm 47 and he's 48... he always refers to me as "his lady", and I love it!
|
“Domestic Partner” seems to be latest PC.
Who do you have to explain to at your age? |

Sorry to tell you Jenna, but there is no “life” partner except the tax man. Only Craftsman comes with a honored lifetime guarantee (so far). Buy a wrench!;) |

Well I suppose it's better than W.I.F.E. now I'll duck & run! |
Like I said, SO will NEVER pass over my lips, geck...
Partner is what I have for business... Life partner, well maybe in time, that's a little ahead of the game right now, but not a bad idea. Lady or M' Lady has a nice ring, thanks :) Lady friend is in the running too. The rest are too coarse, keep them to yourselves Treeview |
Life partner (= Lebenspartner) is pretty common in german - with all its lack of any romantic sense.
What's about a marriage? ;) At least in german it sounds best as 'my woman', my 'man', if you're over 30. |
How about 'Other half'? It's kind of casual but gets the point across without sounding awkward.
|
What's wrong with bf/gf? You are young at heart...
|
SuzyQ,
You're right, this might just do. Too early for marriage but a possibility. Same for life-partner. Things are moving along in that direction though :) Treeview |
Why not narrow down significant other to "SO" (it's initials)?
|
What happened to age is only a number? If girlfriend/boyfriend is good at 20,why not at 50 or 60 or 70 even. From experience,it certainly beats wife or husband.

Oh please, oh please, oh please don't use anything like......
woman friend partner life partner (used more often in a homosexual relationship rather than a hetero relationship) old lady significant other S/O domestic partner (sounds like your dating your dog.....sorry PF hun!) main squeeze I absolutley adore "This is my lady ________ (insert name here)......but don't add friend to it.....it's just a tad condescending in that it sounds like she is not significant enough. And...to be quite honest.....I truly don't feel there is anything wrong with saying "This is my girlfriend_______", but if it doesn't have a good ring to you....nothing I say will change that in your mind. I truly think she'll love being called your "lady".....and that is my vote! When you do intro her like this....watch her face for a glint of a smile! Best of luck treeview! You are quite the gentleman to want to make this a comfortable moment for you and your.....lady! Awwwwwww! I'm touched by this thread! |
You're only as old as you feel!!
|
Age in years has never been an issue for me.
Like I said, girl isn't in the cards. Lady is much nicer. TV [Thanks Lixy Chick :) ] |
Today I was reading an article for a sociology class and came across the definition of Significant Other:
Those whose judgements are most important to our self-concept. George Herbert Mead [1863-1931] came up with the idea. I don't want to be with someone who holds control of my self-worth. I want someone to share out life with. T |

The 'rest' were not meant to be taken seriously...they were meant as harmless fun...though there are some that use them i spose *L* |
