Greatest rock song in existence

Alright folks, I'll test your rock knowledge here..

The greatest rock song in existance..Van Halen's Eruption..

Mark Vieth 02-25-2005 02:57 AM

Mine would have to be a slow song done by metallica. "Nothing else Matters"

dicksbro 02-25-2005 04:08 AM

There are so many, but my wife and my favorite song has been:

Unchained Melody ... several different artists including Elvis

I learned to play that a while ago. Thanks for reminding me to work on it again!

Greatest rock song in existence...hmm...well there's so many great ones that don't exist, so I"ll have to eliminate them...shit, I don't know...Frankenstein by the Edgar Winter Group? Electric Funeral by Black Sabbath? Dante's Inferno by Iced Earth?

Geezzzzzzz Belial...you've got some memory!

I'm going with Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" and "Dream On" (one can't go without the other). But then there's AC/DC's Thunderstruck (it's got all the elements). What about Pink Floyd's "The Wall"? And Green Day's been no slouch with "American Idiot" (but that could be construed as something else).

Oh wait...could it be Procol Harem's "Lighter Shade of Pale"?

No no, here ya go...it's gotta be The Animals "House of the Rising Sun", right?

What's my grade? This is a test...isn't it? Do I go to the head of the class?

Belial 02-25-2005 06:23 AM

Pour Some Sugar On Me, Love Bites (hell, the whole Hysteria album) by Def Leppard, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Ironman by Black Sabbath, Highway Star by Deep Purple, Welcome To The Jungle by GnR, Cemetary Gates by Pantera...

Superfreak 02-25-2005 10:15 AM

I vote for the entire "Frampton Comes Alive" Album. Anyone with me on that?

Irish 02-25-2005 12:49 PM

Lixy---There's still hope for you!I heard,recently(on the news)that Steven
Tyler(Aerosmith) & his wife had separated! You could be #3(?) :line: Irish

BigBear57 02-25-2005 12:59 PM

Always liked Zep's Houses of the Holy or 4th album. Of course Bob Segar's stuff was always tops at my house too. I've worn out 3 copies of Bonnie Raitte's "The Glow" ... that's another all timer. How's that for variety? LOL

WildIrish 02-25-2005 02:16 PM

Metallica's "Frayed Ends Of Sanity"

And "Get Down With The Sickness" is a keeper too.

OMG...Tool's 46 & 2! Love that song.

RaTheSunGod 02-25-2005 02:43 PM

Head of the class

Someone's been naughty, they don't get to go to the end of the class, but they get to stay after. :x:

By the way, Eruption is hard as shit to play, I wish you luck on that.

:x: I know...I know Irish! Hey...he's in my crosshairs! *giggle*

BTW everyone...rock isn't just Heavy Metal...but Heavy Metal is always rock at heart!

Just had that thought in my head all day...lol!

Oh...and one more thing...is it "Lighter Shade of Pale" or Whiter Shade of Pale"? Been thinkin bout that all day too! I've almost convinced myself it's "Whiter"...but then I've been known to be wrong...(once)!

And Ra? Was it me who's been naughty (kicking a stone...standing alone in a sun dress that you can see right through because the sun is behind me and shining at my back)? If so, why (biting on the tip of my right index finger as I tilt my head like the RCA dog...flipping hair off left shoulder)?

*giggle*

I asked everyone at work who might be a rocker to gimme some input. You should have heard some of the suggestive suggestions I got with that request...but I digress! Um...so these are some of the answers I got...

Free Bird
Sympathy for the Devil
Stairway to Heaven
The Immigrant Song
Born To Be Wild
She Bop (believe it or not...someone threw in Cyndi Lauper...lmao!)
Paradise By The Dashboard Lights
Your Move (YES)
Major Tom
Ironman (or is it Iron Man??...good gawd I should know that...drugs'll do it everytime...lol)
When Doves Cry (I said...awwwwww when it was suggested...but didn't agree it's an "in all existance" candidate.
Wooden Ships

There was more...but I forget them all!

*bends over for the teacher's paddle*

I AM NOT CHEATING! You didn't say I couldn't copy off of anyone else's paper. Matter of fact...you didn't give ANY rules!

*makes a mad dash for the revolving door*

osuche 02-25-2005 05:42 PM

Sign me up for anything classic Pink Floyd. I **really** like Dark Side of the Moon.

But if you disagree you get to go to the dungeon... so it might be worth it!

scotzoidman 02-26-2005 12:10 AM

Lixy, it is "Whiter Shade of Pale"...hope I've put your mind at rest...& it is one of the all-time killer rock songs, supposedly derived from J S Bach (& one of the 1st songs I learned when I was playing the Hammond regularly)...also great is LedZep's Kashmir...
One I keep going back to when I need that out-of-body experience is Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"...

lizzardbits 02-26-2005 03:07 AM

Stairway to Heaven
La Grange
Iron Man
Smoke on the Water
Paranoid
Inna Godda Da Vida
Strangle Hold
....All way excellent classics.....

My personal favs, though, are:
Black #1---Type O Negative
Summer Breeze (remake)--Type O Negative
Be My Druidess--Type O Negative
Angel--Astral Sleep
Reptile--Nine Inch Nails
Closer--Nine Inch Nails
Physical--Nine Inch Nails
and track #69 off of Undertow--Tool
Sober--Tool
Blue--A Perfect Circle
or just basically anything that Peter Steele, Trent Reznor, And Maynard James Keenan has done, or influenced

thereIam 02-26-2005 04:21 AM

It has to be one of two songs:

Child in Time by Deep Purple or 2112 by Rush.

Or it could be the dark horse candidate: Moonshine by Black Oak Arkansas.

Oldfart 02-26-2005 05:38 AM

Scotz,

Both, but with addenda on how they relate to the music of the latter 20th Century.

John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, "On the Dark Side" with all it's connotations.

jseal 03-01-2005 06:29 AM

Can't Buy Me Love, Back In The USSR: The Beatles

Brown Sugar: The Rolling Stones

Purple Haze: Jimi Hendrix

A solid mineral object which may be igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic in origin.

How that relates to music et cetera et cetera escapes me at the moment...

Oldfart 03-02-2005 04:49 AM

Scotz,

By beating a "rock" on a hollow log, a beat may be established.

By a number of people beating a "rock" on a hollow log or three, contrapuntal beats

may be established, leading to sex in the outside world, or dancing in the bible belt.

BTW, the best points on record needles were made of diamond, making Beethoven and

his fellow classicists maybe rock musicians?

Oldfart,

I always believed that. :) Sooner or later, the word was bound to get out.

wyndhy 03-02-2005 09:39 PM

giggling at OF...you wiley old coot!

as usual i could never pick just one or even a few.
however! if a swing vote is needed, a properly greased [*eyebrow wiggle*] palm would surely secure another vote in your favor.

I had already remembered the old cartoon from Mad Magazine, depicting the origins of music (stick against rock, rock against stick, rock against head...until, about 10,000 BC, orchestras were formed...)
Incidently, in these parts, some Southern Baptists always leave their shades up when having sex, so people won't think they're dancing...
As to whether Ludwig & his contemporaries were the rockers of their day, Mr. Twain once said of the music of Richard Wagner, "It's not nearly as awful as it sounds..."

Just a few random neural firings from the Scotzophrenic mind...

scotzoidman,

The proof that it was early rock music! :D

Mae 03-03-2005 02:40 PM

Depends on what kind of "rock" you mean.

Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody"
AC/DC "Back in Black" or "You Shook Me All Night Long"
Bob Seger "Main Street"
Van Halen "Running With The Devil"
Scorpions "No One Like You"
Phil Collins "Susudio"
Led Zeppelin "Kashmir"
Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb"

And others too numerous to mention. Hope to be back soon. Couldn't resist the question. :)

RaTheSunGod 03-06-2005 02:01 PM

Not bad

lizzardbits, you are a woman after my own heart, I must admit, your personal favs are also some of my personal faves, especially 'Sober'...because Tool RAWKS MY SAWKS! :nopics:
