How do you heat your home Me? Gas How 'bout ya'll..... was wondering because I just saw out my office window my neighbor just had his oil tank filled Oh yeah and I'm kicking myself for the past 10 years for not having a real (wood burning) fireplace Have a gas one wish it wasn't there

I have electric appliances and heat. I also have a wood stove but don't use it as much.

I do not trust gas. I'm super sensitive to the smell they add to it and can smell a leak easily. It amazes me how many people have leaks and don't know or don't care.

I heat with a natural gas (methane) furnace, but have been turning the thermostat down to 60F and closing all the vents except for the room I'm in and supplementing that with a 1500w, oscillating, ceramic heater. Living alone makes this more reasonable than for a family. Actually I've found it to give me 'about' a 25%+ savings. My combined $$$ spent have certainly been considerably lower the past couple years but it is hard to get very accurate without inside/outside temperature differentials for the season.

My daughter also heats with natural gas but they supplement with a free standing soap stone wood burner piped into the fireplace that does an impressive job. Much more practical for a family with two small kids. Sonoutlaw has a supply of wood that only costs MUCH labor that he willing invests throughout the year.

Lil I have a plumbing background so I know how to prevent leaks and fix them when they occur I installed the new stove in my old house about 12 years ago with my brother inlaw 10 thumbs never leaked and the house is still there

We use one of the new oil burners. Much more energy efficient than the one it replaced 3 years ago.

We heat with gas but in Okla we only have about 2 to 3 weeks of below freezing weather.Its the summer that kills us with elec. AC 95 to 103 heat

Used to have an oil furnace but switched it out for gas this year. We also have a wood-burning stove.

to heat the house we have a wood burning stove and 20 acres of our 40 acre plot of land is wooded so dad and i or sometimes dad alone... will cut trees haul it to the barn where he splits it and I stack it to cure for next season. for my room I have a 1500 w oil radiator thingie makes it nice and toasty

We're electric. Upstairs is on a heat/ac pump. Downstairs has base board heaters. I don't use the heater and have a window ac for my room in the summer. In winter I don't jack the bill up, but summer just about kills me. Just glad I don't have the pay that bill.

what my dearest fails to mention is that he has a heated waterbed to get all snuggly!

And one hell of a bed warmer that visits. ;)

We're all gas/electric here, an electric heat pump actually pumps very *cool* air, so it's really not efficient, even here in the heart of TVA-cheap electricity. Used to have a wood fireplace which was converted to gas logs, which was a life-saver for my mother during the 2 week power outage 14 years ago (I was then living a few miles away, & was greatly inconvenienced when I lost my cable for about an hour). Of course I gave up the gas logs when I had them take down the Leaning Chimney Of Crieve Hall nearly two years ago.

This house is heated by a GHP (geothermal heat pump). We have a wood burner but rarely use it nowadays.

I just open my doors. :roflmao:

Now THAT is something we all should be looking into. :nod:

I truly wonder how much the gas and oil companies 'detour' that kind of development.

We use oil in NH.(Nextdoor to a delivery dealer)In Fla everything is electric!
I just changed our hot water heater over to electric(alot of plumbing &
electric work)The people that owned it before had a gas Hot Water heater.
My wife calls ahead & has everything turned on before our trip here but the
gas co, won't turn on the gas unless someone is there.When you get here,around 10:00 on a Sun night after driving for 2 days,you want to take a HOT shower,but you're at the mercy of the gas co,until they send someone
out,sometime on Monday!Nomore-Thats why I changed it over!Thankfully

P.S.Now I don't have to worry about the gas co. & their "leak test"!

Unfortunately the pump still runs off the electric, so if there's a power cut, as there was today, we're still left with no light, no heat, no water etc :rolleyes: We're back on for now :thumb:

The house is heated with oil, forced hot water. There are 4 seperate heating zones, each with its own themostat. So we only heat the part of the house we're using. (bedrooms at night, downstairs during the day) But the oil heat doesn't come on much because we also have a wood burning stove. It keeps the first floor toasty and takes the chill off upstairs. We cut wood on our land, so is free. And is great during power outages. Not only heats but then also can cook on it. (have an electric cook stove/oven)
