Signs that the seasons are changing....

I am sitting at my computer this morning and I can hear a flock of geese coming towards my house. They fly in "V" formation and the lead goose seems to squawk out commands. In my neck of the woods, when "The geese are on the move" (as is the expression round here), it is the very first sign that Autumn is coming. Soon the mums will bloom and the leaves on the trees will change color.

At Pixies we have a diversified grouping of people from all over the world. I was wondering.....as the seasons change, whats the first sign Mother Nature sends your way?

scotzoidman 08-30-2002 06:48 AM

Here in the US south, we usually see a little break in the heat & humidity somewhere in October...

Lilith 08-30-2002 07:08 AM

I am sorry...what are seasons??? and how do they change??? Here it will be a while...like almost mid October/November before the leaves really change, what few do. We always drive up to NC to go see the pretty ones:p

Grumble 08-30-2002 07:44 AM

well here in the temperate zone of southern Australia, the golden wattle burst into flower as a sign of oncoming spring.
The nectarine tree in my back yard has green buds now and the bloody grass is staring to grow, come October I will have to mow it twice a week

legend 08-30-2002 08:01 AM

well since it's going from winter to spring, nature won't call as often each day :p

skipthisone 08-30-2002 01:54 PM

Our fall here in Illinois will not be as good as usual here due to no rain and about half the trees have lost their leaves already. Any other year here in about 4 weeks the maple leaves would be 100's or colors and my drive to work would be wonderful.

fingers 08-30-2002 03:21 PM

we only have one season in england. bloody cold all year round.

Sugarsprinkles 08-30-2002 06:24 PM

Well, here in Michigan we only have two seasons.....Winter, and Construction! :D
You can tell it's Spring (aka Construction) when the orange construction barrels sprout on virtually ALL roads!! :D

GermanSteve 08-30-2002 07:04 PM

From August to September temperature goes down rather rapidly. The first leaves start becoming yellow already and almost nobody (compared to the really hot days) goes swimming in the lakes any more.

I like one thing when Winter is coming: you can smell the clearness of the air short before the first day it starts snowing.

The water gets stiff!

Sassy Rose 08-31-2002 01:33 AM

Lixy, here we get the ducks and geese on the move as well but I really love it when the leaves start changing. I hope you all don't mind if I indulge in sharing a few pics I took last fall :p

These were actually taken in October last year, but I can't help but share them with you. This first one is my son in front of some wild grapes that grow on our fence :)

& I thought only Tennessee was like that...around here we refer to the orange barrels as the State Flower! Except here, winter is no impediment to construction...

Gee, that's almost enough to make me like Michigan winters ...........almost.. :D

xanne 09-01-2002 09:18 AM

Great pics Dicksbro and Sassy! The leaves are not turning color yet, neither do they fall much. We have a relatively mild winter and still have grass through most of it. But it's gonna be raining lots in the coming week and it's going to be like that for a while....................

TheMunk 09-01-2002 09:37 AM

The weather in Nebraska (definitely NOT bragging about being here) is completely unpredictable. Usually I know fall/winter is here by waking up to the snow plow's blade scraping down the front street in a way that makes you squirm like fingernails down a chalkboard. That's how I normally figure on wearing a coat to work :)

M45 and Xanne, thank you so much, I am glad you enjoyed the pics. Those were done last fall, but you can bet I'll be back out at it again in another month or so :) Outdoor photography is one of my escapes.

Here's one more from last fall...it is a windbreak that borders an orchard with the Horseheaven Hills in the background.

LixyChick 09-01-2002 01:46 PM

Canna's are in full bloom.......

Soon I will have to cut these back and dig up the bulbs to store over winter so they don't freeze. They multiply so much I will end up giving half of them away!

We decided to paint our barn. OMG! What was I thinking? LOL! This is the biggest job thus far since we bought the place 3 years ago. Here is the progression.........

LixyChick 09-01-2002 02:10 PM

Get off that ladder!

Oh, I hate that ladder! But the barn is huge! No other way to reach it.........That's a friend on the ground pacing and every now and then running to hold the ladder!

LixyChick 09-01-2002 02:13 PM

Painted.........

I don't think anyone fertilizes them, Lixy....I believe they mate and multiply in dark corners...just like those plastic grocery bags. LOL

Grumble 09-01-2002 11:33 PM

love the work on that barn, glad I didnt have to paint it lol

BamaKyttn 09-02-2002 01:05 AM

how can I tell it's turning to fall? my g/f who is meticulus about everything starts letting herself grow, to help protect the naughty bits from cold fingers.

mike10942 09-02-2002 08:04 AM

seasons

Well, quite awhile back we had a thread about our computer areas. Anyway, we sent in pics and mine had some windows. The seasons are now changing, confirmed by the fact that I now have the windows (not the blinds) closed while sitting here nude at the 'puter cuz the 38 degree morning gets my toes cold!

Geese Flying in a V

The "V" formation.. actually is an aerodynamically efficient method that the geese have perfected.. The lead goose creates slight low pressure gradients off of each of his wingtips. Two geese fly in these areas.. and their total drag is lessened. This is repeated... to extend the "V". The FAA has considered creating similar formations with passenger jets to mimick "V" to gain the fuel the efficency.

LixyChick 09-03-2002 04:10 PM

TY for all the contributions thus far to this thread!

LMAO Sugarsprinkles! Too funny hun!

Oh, and Kendall....TY for the info. I do remember seeing something to that effect on The Animal Planet once. I watch them fly over and can see the lead back down and the next in line take his place......must be the wind drag that tires them and they fly for such long distances before they rest. I love to watch the gaggle that fly in numbers more than 10. I have counted as much as 67 in one pass over. It is deafening when they are directly overhead. But anyway.....I do go on don't I? LOL!

Again....ty everyone....this is getting more and more interesting!

One question....How the fuck do you get the damn geese to MOVE??? They seem to get as far as Detroit and that's as far as they go!! Every golf course and every beach and every park here is loaded with them and their "lovely" by-products!! One park near my home, when I drive thru I can see entire Canada Geese families....the babies (yes, goslings...I know...) are so damn cute but there is such an over population of them here!!

dicksbro 09-03-2002 07:28 PM

Sassy and Lixy ...

Truly humbled by all those beautiful pictures! So much talent.

Lixy ... I assume you'll be converting the grapes to vino????

Here in south Orange County, California there isn't much change from season to season. I thought I'd miss it when I moved here from colder climate, but I've been here 11 years and haven't missed the change of seasons at all -- Where I live they have license plate holders that say "Most Moderate Climate on Earth" - in the summer it gets as high as 80 degrees or so and in the winter as low as 50 degrees or so.

We do however have whale watching season during February and March. lol

dicksbro 09-05-2002 12:23 PM

Yeah, Orange county is nice. New airport is nice, but miss the charm of the ol' John Wayne ... open walled terminal.
