Lost In Translation

There was some interesting confusion regarding the meaning of the word fanny. Since there are multiple nationalities represented at Pixie's , what words have you seen or heard used that are interpreted differently? Or what words are sometimes used in one context and bring to mind something else?

I find it amusing that at the end of the commercial for the vehicle HumVee, also known as a Hummer, they close the ad with the logo: Hummer...there is nothing like it. They are right if you are talking ablot a Blow Job! (What was the ad agency thinking of with that logo?)

Then could someone clue in Steve Jobs and Apple computer that their logo of the apple with a bite taken out of it was actually a symbol back in the late 60's and early 70's that swingers used to let others know they participated in the lifestyle. There was even a lapel pin.

What are some of your additions?

Well the word "jerk" always made me laugh. Simply because of the "clean and jerk" used in weight lifting. (If you can see the pun you'll get the joke.) I mean it really should be the "jerk and clean" now that would be funny.

Also "snatch". Now most people think of pussy when they hear this word. But again you go back to weight lifting and it's funny again.

I wonder if the IOC or the commonwealth organizer's ever saw that one.

Keep your pecker up! Totally different in Great Britain. It means keep your chin up.

A banger is a sausage.

Knocked up means when you get up in the morning

fag meaning cig or derrogatorily used for gay

I used to have a close British friend who could never stop giggling when I'd forget and say something stupid like "I have a stain on my pants."

Pants = underwear in UK....and they are "trousers" in the US. LOL

Was a time when gay meant happy...or pretty, as she had on a gay hat.

Yeah, a while back on another board someone had said "God hates fags".

My reply:

As he should. Cigarettes are bad for you.

Why they say that in America instead of England where people will understand them, I don't know.

i used to wait tables and every now and then the catch of the day would be red snapper. i could hardly control my giggles if anyone asked if it was very fishy tasting

Here in the states we can buy a little ball of netting like material to be used to wash with in the tub/shower. We call it a poof. (Have also heard it called poof ball.)
In other countries (I know in Australia & the UK at least) 'poof' referrs to a gay person.
Now washing with a poof is a whole lot different then washing with a poof!! LOL

And if you look at poof ball....
Ball being a round object or the act of fucking....
Kinda slightly different don't ya think.

Sorry to take your fun away but that is the "Cling & jerk", not clean and jerk.

slightly off the original topic.... knackered always makes me grin, and it just seems a word not appropriate for conference calls, but the Brits I work with don't seem to think like me.

Another that I quite like is jiggery-pokery - just sounds naughty doesn't it? I heard this from a Brit IT guy (who was described as camp (also a Brit term for gay, as in he's a bit camp)) who described the work behind the scenes of a program as "jiggery pokery". When I asked for a definition he said "knackered", which of course to my delight led to asking for another definition. They were a fun implementation team!

While making plans for Grumble to visit the US last spring I told him we'd go to a baseball game. (His first ever.) I told him we'd root for the Paw. Red Sox to win.

My use of 'root' meant: to noisily applaud or encourage a contestant or team : CHEER

I soon learned that in Australia it means: Root (verb and noun) : synonym for f*ck in nearly all its senses: "I feel rooted"; "this washing machine is rooted"; "(s)he's a good root". A very useful word in fairly polite company.

Slightly different I'd say. :D
