Could erotic liteture ever be considered art by most people?

I think its graphic content will keep most people from seeing its artistic value and thinking its just something to jerk off to.(Not saying jerking off to this stuff is a bad thing, I do it ferquently)

Most people don't think they can paint like Picasso so they never try. Lots of people think they can write jerk off material and it gets listed as erotica. Erotica is too friendly a writing form to ever be taken seriously. No elitism.

the earthling 2,

Yes mam, I do. Perhaps not soon, but society changes. The responsibility will remain with the author to write a good tale.

Thanks never thought of that. Still fear of my work not being accepted stopped me from posting on this site for a long time. I think everyone should try making work like the type they enjoy.(Not saying that this work should be accepted)

A few pieces have reached the level of "significant acceptance" if not art. I'm thinking, for example, The Decameron (subtitle: Prencipe Galeotto) by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio. If you've never read the short stories contained in the book, they really are very erotic. Of course that was back in the late 1490's, but it was really very delightful. My Secret Garden and other books by Nancy Friday are modern books that also come pretty close. Those are just a couple, but I've no doubt that a few others have also achieved some level of recognition that puts them above being mere sex books. General acceptance, no, I doubt that. I think Lilith said it pretty well in her post.

It's a section in bookstores . . . so quick answer for me is yes.

Ever read the Song of Solomon?

If erotica can make it to being religion, art's easy.

<~~thought the same thing^^^

erotica has been around since peeps could write a complete sentence - it fades in and out of fashion.

Erotica has been found in the ruins of Pompei & Herculeneum, mostly as ads for local brothels, & in the cathouses themselves as a menu of available services as well...it has always been with us, it was the Victorian era that demoted it to smut status...
