It has begun ...
As one part of their plans to combat man-made climate change, the UK’s Liberal Democrats have proposed phasing out gasoline powered cars by 2040. While I know that the Lib Dems are the smallest (by a good bit) of the UK’s three major parties, this is, as far as I know, the first significant political party of the G8 nations to propose the “unthinkable”.
Stay tuned; now it starts to get interesting. |
Good for them! Not sure what they're proposing to replace the fossil fuels with, but the determination to get rid of gasoline powered cars sounds like the right way to go.

Some of the emergent technology to do with electrical storage may bring the fuelless car within reach within the next 15 years.
So long as it's not too heavy handed. What the fuck are we going to do with our million buck Bugatti if there's no fuel? |
I'm all for taking reasonable steps to reduce our consumption of fossil fuels. I'll definately consider going hybrid with our next car purchase, and I'd give serious thought to a full electric vehicle.
I made the switch to compact fluorescent lamps and am looking in to either solar panels or possibly even a wind turbine. With the cost of electricity having gone up 75% in the past two years...something has to be done. |
According to some, oil will have become so difficult to extract by then that the EI/EO will be prohibitive to even bothering and the stuff that is recovered will be harder and more expensive to refine. So by 2040, perhaps the point will be moot; if no one can afford the gas, then no amount of regulation could do more towards eliminating the use gas-powered engines.

They may have to convert to LPG and harvest the compost heap or pig farm.
