I'm quite young to have regrets and perhaps this is the arrogance of youth speaking, but when I was about 19 I decided to try to live my life by one rule:

Think carefully about everything that you do and regret nothing.

The thinking behind this came from the fact that you can only make a decision based on the knowledge and experience you have at the time and regret (like guilt) is a wasted emotion.

I figured I'll be happy if I can look back on my life and think to myself 'I did what I thought was right at the time.' You can't ask for more than that. So far this has worked out pretty well for me, and while my life has not been plain sailing, the adversity just serves to make enjoy the good times even more. After all, I'm a damn sight luckier than 95% of the world . . .
