If you are worried about the whole water thing (as I think many should with the feds/local govts. conveniently just raising the amounts of contaminants/chemicals allowed so towns can find a loophole to get around the expense of cleaning it up), Cheyenne mentioned the Reverse Osmosis process. While buying a whole system is in fact very expensive, many grocery stores have the machines that dispense R.O. water and you can come and refill gallon jugs at a mere 39 cents or so. My family's been doing this for several years now ever since we noticed the chlorine smell growing stronger and the taste turning funny. It has been a cheap and easy alternative to the problems that come along with city water.
