You may want to talk to AZRedHot. The lady has a lot of insight and talent with a guitar.

Neige, if you learn Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin you'll have my heart forever.

I've got so much to do and it seems there's never enough time to get it done.

It's a Beltone acoustic. That's all I know.

Ayuh, I guarantee it. The good news is, when you've played enough your fingertips will toughen up. At first, though... well... no pain no gain applies.
What kind of music are you wanting to play?

I want to play the accordion. The guitar was cheaper though! (Seriously, I just paid $50 for it. I figured I'll try it out and if I don't like it, I'll be able to get that back for it.)
I want to play Pink Floyd. I want to play stuff I can sing along to.

If you're up for it, you can give yourself a little protection of the fake callus variety by dabbing superglue on your fingertips and letting it dry. DON'T TOUCH THEM TOGETHER!! It doesn't last long, but it can give you a little extra something as you learn and until you build your own calluses; you'll be so very proud when you do.
I had a hard time, too, and OTP suggested that I switch to nylon strings while I was learning; it helped a lot, but once you change your guitar to nylon (if it's not a classical already), you have to change the nut, too, so it's not a change to be made lightly.
I'm of the "start cheap and upgrade later" school myself (though I can see the argument that a great sounding guitar might be more motivational); my first was a $99 Walmart special. I didn't want to feel guilty if it sat in a corner, and it did for like 2 years. But she was and remains a decent sounding guitar for the price. And then I went to guitar camp and saw all these beautiful instruments, and it was all over for me. Be careful; guitars are like tattoos...almost no one gets just one. Guitar Acquisition Syndrome is a real disease! Good luck learning; you'll love it, even when you're cussing.

Too true! A friend of mine has G.A.S. and the $$$ add up.
Sounds good though ...

I'm heading in to work in a few and then going to my kid's dojo picnic. Apparently he gave everyone a beat down last night and I missed it so I'm looking forward to the blow by blow.

Applies to harp, as well. And of course, the finger thing as well.
Though my shoulder won't allow me to play mine lately. Grrr.
