What!?! Roaches can swim? That's right. A roach can hold its breath for 40 minutes too!

Most roaches live in tropical places like rain forests. Even though there are several thousand different kinds, only about 5 are commonly found in people's homes.

Cockroaches prefer pressure on three sides of their body, which keeps them in cracks and crevices where they spend 75% of their lives.

Cockroaches do not bite. The spines on their legs may cause a minor irritation if handled. Contrary to popular belief, except in the most filthy conditions, cockroaches do not transmit human diseases. In fact, there is evidence that they secrete bactericidal substances from their tarsal pads which prevent the etransmission of pathogens.

Some products not normally considered food -- such as starch-based paints, wallpaper paste, envelope glue, and bar soaps -- contain carbohydrates, and hence are food for cockroaches.

It's hard to sneak up on a roach. They have one great big nerve connecting their tails to their heads, alerting them to danger from behind.

Male cockroaches weigh less than female cockroaches, and males can fly and flee faster.

Cockroaches are supreme couch potatoes. They spend 75 percent of their time resting.

Roaches can flatten their bodies and crawl through a crack thinner than a dime.

The actor Nicolas Cage ate a cockroach in the movie Vampire's Kiss, just for the shock value.

Flick on a flashlight in a dark room and you might see cockroaches scurrying for shelter. That’s because the insects also have two very big eyes that wrap around the front and sides of their heads. But studies have shown the roaches see mostly infrared and blue-green colors, so a yellow or red filter on a light might foil the roaches from sensing trouble.

Cockroaches have also developed interesting ways of ensuring that their young make it to adulthood. Most species give birth to live young — highly unusual for insects — but a sure way to prevent other critters from feeding on their eggs.
